What We Believe

What We Believe

Our Values

  • CARING:We believe In caring for each other as Christ loved and cared for the church.(Matthew 20:28, 25:34-40; James 1:27)
  • HERITAGE: We value the rich Christian heritage of Swamp Church. (Psalm 16:5-6) We acknowledge and value our church's history reflected In such documents as: the Apostle's Creed, the Nicene Creed, Luther's Catechism, the Augsburg Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, the Westminster Confession and the United Church of Christ Statement of Faith.
  • FELLOWSHIP: We are committed to fellowship with God and each other. Small group ministries are one of the most effective methods to build caring relationships. (Acts 2:42-44; Philippines 2:2; John 17:23; 1 John 1:17)
  • STEWARDSHIP: We value the privilege and responsibility of caring and managing God's creation. We encourage the biblical principle of tithing. (Matthew 25:16-30)
  • BIBLICAL AUTHORITY: The scriptures are the inspired Word of God, which are infallible and provide perfect direction for our journey through life. (Romans 10:17; James 1:22; 2 Peter 1:20-21)
  • WORSHIP: We value the opportunity to praise and glorify God publicly and privately. Anything we do that pleases God is worship. (Matthew 4:8-10; Psalm 100; Mark 7:6; Romans 12:1-2)
  • SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP: We value leadership based on calling, character, faithfulness and spiritual giftedness. (Epheslans 1:17, 4:11-13; 1 Timothy 3:212; Titus 1:6-9, 2:1-8) Every Christian is a minister but God has called some to be leaders in the church to equip and oversee the congregation. We practice congregational polity in which the people value leadership. We delegate administrative and decision-making responsibility into the hands of those who are committed and growing in Christ. We prefer to make decisions by concensus.
  • CHRIST CENTERED: We value full devotion to Jesus Christ in all we do. Our goal is to have Christ's character reflected in our own. (John 14:6, 15:1-17; Matthew 10:37-39)
  • FAMILY: We value the family as the primary place where spiritual nurturing and growth occurs. (Genesis 2:18-24, 17:1-9, 22:16-18; Epheslans 6:4; 1 Timothy 3:45)
  • DISCIPLEMAKING: We believe that the purpose of the church is to continue Jesus Christ's ministry of reconciliation to God. Disciple making is the primary and overarching value that drives our congregational life. (Matthews 28:18-20; Mark 13:10, 16:15; Luke 24:46-47; John 20:21; Acts 1:8; Colossians 1:28)

Our Beliefs

  • The One True God of the Bible, the Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer of the world, the Father of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
  • We recognize the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the Inspired, infallible Word of God and the ultimate rules of Christian faith and practice.
  • We believe that God has given each believer the gift of prayer and "talking and listening" to God through prayer is critical for a Christ-centered life.
  • The deity of the Lord Jesus Christ and the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
  • We believe in the Holy Spirit who indwells believers, comforting, guiding and empowering for ministry.
  • God created man perfect, but man chose to sin and his only hope of salvation is through belief In Jesus Christ, Cod's son. We can do nothing to earn this salvation, nor do we deserve it. We are saved by the grace of God through faith.
  • We believe that Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation. John 14:6 Jesus says, “I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." While some will say this is exclusionary, as we look deeper we find this is not the case. In Romans 2 Paul explains God's righteous judgment and that It is not the label you take (Christian, Jew, Gentile, Greek) but the condition of your heart right before God. Self-seeking individuals who reject the truth will not be in Heaven. Indeed many who call themselves Christian, who give the appearance of being godly, but do not have a reiatlonnshlp with Jesus Christ will also be excluded. In Matthew 7:21, Jesus says, Not everyone who says to me Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father in heaven." The scriptures are clear that those who have a relationship with Jesus and obey His commandments have assurance of salvation.
  • As believers we are commanded to share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ with those who do not know Jesus Christ.
  • God is consistently at work changing and transforming the lives of believers to reflect the life of Jesus Christ.
  • We celebrate the sacraments of baptism into the faith and Holy Communion.

Our Traits

  • DISCIPLESHIP: Every church member is equipped to fulfill the Great Commission as given to us by Jesus Christ. Becoming a Christian and growing as a disciple of Christ and leading others to Christ is our primary goal.
  • PRAYER: Our church is a praying congregation and knows that Christ's purposes for our lives and our church will only be realized when we "take everything to the Lord in prayer." We can only do the will of our Lord, when we do it in HIS power, not ours, and that power is released through fervent, continuous and effective prayer.
  • MENTORING: A unique relationship where we empower, affirm and encourage each other to use our God-given gifts and talents as we mature In Jesus Christ.
  • ACCOUNTABLILTY and COVENANTS: We help keep our promises to God and each other through Christian love.
  • TEAM BUILDING: Jesus built a team of disciples to Introduce the world to Christianity and we believe that His model is the best way to maximize our efforts in spreading the gospel.
  • LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: Christian leadership grows out of our maturing in the Spirit and a passion to equip persons for ministry through a spirit of servanthood.
  • LAY MINISTRY: Each Christian understands his/her unique spiritual gifts, heart-felt passion, abilities, personality and life expereinces that God gives him/her for service in the church and to reach the world for Christ.
  • TRADITION AND INNOVATION: The message of the gospel is NEVER changing, but the methods to deliver the message are EVER changing. To remain relevant in a changing culture, we seek to present the gospel using creative and innovative approaches.
  • FAILURE: Is expected in our efforts as we learn by mistakes. Jesus does not ask For perfection, but obedience and faith. In failure, we offer grace and encouragement to keep trying.
  • HOSPITALITY and FELLOWSHIP: Are the first steps of evangelism. Welcoming and meeting the needs of people providing a biblical foundation to share Christ's love.
